How to choose a good name for a pet

We must take into account that a name's main function it to catch our pet's attention and thus make their training easier. Therefore, the name shouldn't be simply pretty - it needs to be practical. In order to find a useful name you should take into account the following guidelines:

  • Your dog's name must be longer than a syllable to make it less confusing.
  • Even if you like long, big-sounding names for dogs, you should know that in general names over two syllables are also not recommended for that same reason.
  • Your dog's name shouldn't sound similar to a daily word or a training order, because they will get confused. For instance, calling your dog "Bo" might lead to confusion with the word "no".
  • Don't use your dog's name when you're angry or they need to be scolded, since they will start linking it with negative experiences.

Besides these guidelines, there are other factors you should keep in mind in order to choose a name for your new pet.

Other things to consider when choosing a name

When it comes to choosing a name for your pet, your own personal taste does matter. Nonetheless, you might want to consider some things before settling.

It's a good idea to take into account your dog's appearance, especially if they have a very particular trait like multicolored spots or different-colored eyes. You can also name them after their origin, a personality trait or their breed's usual size.

Some owners like to give their dogs dignified, meaningful names from mythology or historical characters. These names tend to be quite long; if you like long names, you've come to the right place. Since long names are usually not recommended, it's better to choose a name that can be snipped into a nickname that's easier to learn.
