Types of Monkeys in India

Monkeys are common primates in India with the western hoolock gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) being the only known ape. The most common Indian monkey is the rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), but there are many other monkey species which can be found in this vast Asian country. These monkeys can be found in many different areas of India, from the Himalayas in the northeastern states to the evergreen Western Ghats mountain ranges. They can even be found in the dry forests found in the central states of India.

AnimalWised shares 10 types of monkeys in India so you can have a better idea of the diversity of primates in this country. We share fun information about each Indian monkey species, as well as pictures to give you a better idea of what they look like.

Rhesus macaque

The rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) is one of the most common Old World primates. It lives across a large percentage of the country. This species is Asian in origin and it is widely distributed in different regions and ranges across India, including Rajasthan, Varanasi, and Delhi.

Rhesus monkeys can reside in urban areas inhabited by humans along with wild and isolated forests. In the cities, these monkeys can be found chiefly in temples. You can recognize a rhesus macaque for its distinctive brown coloring.

Bonnet macaque

A common monkey in India, the bonnet macaques (Macaca radiata) have tails longer than their head and body. In fact, reaching almost 70 cm (27.5") long, the bonnet macaque is the monkey with the longest tail in the nation. It can also be recognized by its gray-brown back and its circular, well-defined cap-like hair.

Bonnet macaques are chiefly concentrated in the Southern peninsular of India. These long-tailed monkeys roam in groups of 20 to 30 and sit on trees. Their habitat includes lush and thick evergreen forests, but also the dry deciduous forests of the Western and Eastern Ghats.

Although they do not appear on our list of the different monkeys from India, you can take a look at different types of howler monkeys in our related guide.

Assam macaque

The Assam macaque (Macaca assamensis) is a larger and stronger animal than the two macaques discussed so far. Also known as the Assamese macaque, the Assam macaque can be found in the Himalayan ranges, Assamese forests and Indian Sundarbans, making it one of the native monkeys of India.

In northeastern states like Sikkim and cities such as Darjeeling, Assam macaques are hunted for their meat and body parts. The latter are believed to be of medicinal use. On account of habitat loss as well as hunting, this species is near threatened.

Assam macaques do not have a tinge of orange color on their body hair like the rhesus macaques. Instead, they are yellow-gray with dark brown faces and short tails.

Arunachal macaque

The Arunachal macaque (Macaca munzala) is a relatively recently discovered species of Indian monkey native to the forests of the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. The Arunachal macaque was discovered as a species in 2004. In the native tongue of the Dirang Monpa people it is called mun zala, which means ‘deep forest monkey’. The Arunachal macaque is one of the most endangered monkeys in the country.

Much like their Assam counterparts, these monkeys from India have a short tail and a dark face. They live in the height of mountain peaks of the northeast. In fact, Arunachal macaques are one of the highest-dwelling primates in the world.

Crab-eating macaque

Also known as the long-tailed macaque or cynomolgus macaque, the crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis) has a particularly distinctive feature. Males have mustaches while females also have facial hair in the shape of the beard. These native monkeys of India eat crabs, but they also feast on insects. In fact, crab-eating macaques are omnivorous animals, as they also feed on fruit.

Crab-eating macaques inhabit rainforests, shrublands and also mangrove forests, but they can also be found in temples and villages. Their range spreads across Southeast Asia.

Unfortunately, the crab-eating macaque is under threat, meaning it is considered one of the endangered animals of mangrove forests.

Stump-tailed macaque

The stump-tailed or bear macaque (Macaca arctoides) is found in the Brahmaputra river valley, extending to northeastern states and the Himalayan region of India. It is a vulnerable species. Stump-tailed macaques have a fur that is dark brown, shaggy thick and a pinkish or reddish hairless face. Their name comes from their short tail. When standing in sunlight, the color of the body darkens.

Lion-tailed macaque

The lion-tailed macaque (Macaca silenus) is a native monkey from the Indian Western Ghats from the Old World family. It inhabits the dense rainforests, but it is pretty rare. In fact, the lion-tailed macaque is both one of the most endangered animals of India and one of the 25 most endangered primates in the world, according to the IUCN.

This medium-sized macaque can be recognized by a mane that is silvery white around its head and its bushy tail, which gives it its name. Interestingly, the call of this monkey species resembles a human's voice. It is also sometimes known as the wanderoo.

Northern pig-tailed macaque

There are two pig-tailed macaque species, the Northern (Macaca leonina) and the Southern (Macaca nemestrina). The Northern pig-tailed macaque is a native monkey of India, as it is found in the states of Assam, Nagaland, Tripura and Manipur. It is a vulnerable species.

The Northern pig-tailed macaque is a medium-sized primate. Although you cannot see it in the pictures, the tail of this species is pig-like and coiled. It is from this feature from which its common name is derived. Infant pig-tailed macaques are born with black fur, which changes to a golden brown with maturity.

Northern plains gray langur

As you may be able to tell from our list, macaques are the most widespread type of monkey in India. The other types of Indian monkey are langurs, leaf-eating monkeys from various genera. One of the largest and heaviest species of Old World monkeys native to India is the northern plains gray langur (Semnopithecus entellus), also known as the Hanuman langur or sacred langur.

As their name suggests, they can have gray coats, but it can also be yellowish. The Hanuman langur's face is slender and black, and they have long, tapering hands and feed. Some related species include the black-footed gray langur, Kashmir gray langur (Semnopithecus ajax) and capped langur (Trachypithecus pileatus). Unlike macaques, gray langurs are purely types of herbivorous animals.

Nicobar long-tailed macaque

The Nicobar long-tailed macaque or Nicobar monkey (Macaca fascicularis umbrosa) is actually a subspecies of the crab-eating macaque described above. Endemic to the Nicobar Island in the Bay of Bengal, this monkey species is known for its brownish gray fur. It is also found in the Great Nicobar bio-reserve in India.

As we have shared, some of the monkeys in India are under threat. Despite conservation efforts, populations numbers are affected by various factors. You can learn more with our article sharing the different types of endangered monkeys.
